Who We Are:
Kaw Lah Films is an Indigenous film group from Burma. Our documentaries examine the social, political and cultural issues faced by our diverse peoples. We use film to educate and raise awareness amongst both the refugee and internally diplaced population while also documenting Burma Army human rights abuses.

Our Audience:
Our primary audience is our own people and as such our films are in local languages. We have films in Sgaw Karen, Pwo Karen, Karenni, Thai, and Burmese. Our films also have English subtitles.

Screenings:
We have screened our films for over 80,000 people in refugee camps along the Thai-Burma border and in the ‘liberated zones’ of eastern Burma. Our films have also been screened in festivals in India, Brazil, Australia, United States, France, Scotland, England, Netherlands and Canada.

Film History (4 docs to date):
Which Way Home? (2007 - 59 min, Audio: Sgaw, Pwo, Burmese & Subtitles: English)
Examines life for Karen refugees after they resettle in Australia. The film was created to better inform refugees in Thailand about the realities of life in a third country so that they might make more informed choice about whether to resettle or not.

The Violence that is Everybody’s Secret (2006 - 62 min, Audio: Sgaw, Pwo, Karenni, Thai, Burmese & Subtitles: English, Thai, Burmese)

This is a film we created in partnership with the Karen Women’s organization. The film looks at sexual and gender based violence within the refugee camps along the Thai-Burma border.

Cease!Fire! (2004 - 49 min, Audio: Sgaw & Subtitles: English)
Karen leaders go to Rangoon to meet with Burma Army leaders to negotiate a ceasefire. The film then returns to Karen State to see whether or not the Burma Army honors the ‘gentleman’s agreement’. More broken promises, more broken lives.

Karen Education Surviving (2003 - 29 min, Audio: Sgaw & Subtitles: English)
Karen State communities struggle to provide schooling to their children despite ongoing Burma Army attacks. We follow Karen State teacher trainers as they walk deep into the war zone to provide training for local teachers during the summer break.
