Taw Oo KTTC Celebrates First Graduation Ceremony, Producing 45 New Teachers for Northern Kawthoolei

Posted: May 14th, 2026

Taw Oo District, April 24, 2026

The Taw Oo Karen Teacher Training College (KTTC) successfully held its first graduation ceremony on April 24, 2026, graduating 45 new teachers who are expected to serve in remote and conflict-affected communities across Northern Kawthoolei.

Growing Demand for Karen Education

The establishment of Taw Oo KTTC comes at a critical time for Karen education. Following the 2021 military coup, the Karen National Union (KNU) regained administrative control over most areas within Karen State. Consequently, some schools previously operated under the Ministry of Education (MoE) transitioned back under the administration of the Karen Education and Culture Department (KECD).

This transition significantly increased the number of schools and students under KECD management, creating an urgent demand for qualified teachers to support local communities.

Challenges Facing Teachers in Conflict Areas

Teachers from Taw Oo and Kler Lwee Htu District have faced increasing difficulties accessing existing Karen Teacher Training Colleges due to ongoing armed conflict, travel restrictions, security concerns, and rising transportation costs.

In response to these challenges, local community leaders, township representatives, and district authorities worked together to establish a new teacher training institution in Taw Oo District, making teacher education more accessible for local communities.

Establishment of Taw Oo KTTC

The Taw Oo Karen Teacher Training College was officially established in 2024 and began its first academic year during 2024–2025. After completing two academic years of training from 2024 to 2026, the college has now successfully produced its first group of graduates.

Among the graduates were 6 male and 39 female students who completed the teacher training program and are expected to begin serving in schools across remote and conflict-affected areas.

Graduation Ceremony and Remarks

The graduation ceremony was attended by officials from the Karen Education and Culture Department, local leaders, and community representatives.

During the event, the Head of the Central Karen Education and Culture Department delivered the opening remarks and emphasized the importance of education in securing the future of the Karen people. The graduates were encouraged to remain committed to their responsibilities and continue serving their communities through education.

Community leaders also expressed appreciation for the graduates’ dedication and perseverance despite the many challenges faced throughout their studies. Speakers highlighted that the newly trained teachers would play an essential role in improving educational access and quality in underserved areas.

Commitment to Education Despite Challenges

The ceremony not only celebrated the achievements of the students but also reflected the Karen community’s continued commitment to strengthening education and investing in future generations despite ongoing political and security challenges.
